| 9 | ![]() | SHORT DESCRIPTION: Mickey Dora Black Cat surfboard by Greg Noll. The board is solid black with a neutral colored stripe with 1/4" balsa wood stringer running down the center of the board. The tail block is 5-1/4" wide. The swept back fin is black and glassed in. NOTES: Miki "Da Cat" Dora, a.k.a. Mickey Dora, a.k.a. "The Black Knight," (born Miklos Sandor Dora 11 August 1934, Budapest, Hungary - died 3 January 2002, Montecito, California, ) was an iconic Malibu surfer of the 1950s and 1960s. He had a unique style, in and out of the water, and was generally considered rather iconoclastic. He is featured in the seminal surf movie The Endless Summer, and is credited in several beach party films - specifically Beach Party (1963), Surf Party (1964), Muscle Beach Party (1964), Bikini Beach (1964), Beach Blanket Bingo (1965), Ski Party (1965) and How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965). According to an article by Drew Kampion on Surfline.com Greg Noll formed a business a business alliance with Miki Dora to manufacture and sell Da Cat surfboards and it ended up being one of the most successful ad campaigns in the sport's history. Greg Noll said "I was making up to 175 boards a week, 60 to 70 employees, advertising, dealers, up to my neck in shit and sinking." NOTES: [Provenance and history notes From Claude O. Jones III, June 6, 2013] Greg Noll Surfboards, Mickey Dora DaCat Model was purchased in 1967 from Longs Sport Shop in Newport News and he was called Cat because of his nose riding ability. It was my first surfboard. The reason I bought it was because of a picture in Surfer Magazine with Mickey Dora looking cool and saying cool stuff about surfing. He was the king of Malibu at the time. I sold it to Bobby McArthur in 1972 and he was going to use it to wake surf behind his boat, but he gave it back to me later when I moved to Hatteras thank goodness! I had been riding short boards but I went back to long boards and that's all I have been riding ever since. It was a white Cat and it was pretty beat up from all the years I had surfed it and a guy named Chris Jepson "the old board fixer upper" told me he could make it a Black Cat so he put the black tint on it to hide all the scars from years of abuse. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: See the object file for an article titled "The Greg Noll Da Cat Model" that can be found on page 104 of the book "Greg Noll: The Art of the Surfboard" by Drew Kampion. | 30 | ![]() ![]() ![]() | SHORT DESCRIPTION: Red-bodied earthenware. The amphora tapers to a blunt point with high shoulder, two ear handles and short neck. Surface encrusted. NOTES: The amphora was used as a container for oil or wines. It was salvaged from the sea's bottom off the ancient harbor of Dor Phoenicia. According to pottery dating, this amphora belongs to the Judean-Persian period, 5th century B.C. It would have been capped with a terracotta or wooden top. This piece was found by an amateur diver. This piece was exchanged for a Seminole dugout canoe sent to the Haifa Museum. NOTES: A book titled "The Phoenicians" contains a chart that indicates this style of amphora might have been produced at Carthage at the start of the 7th century B.C. | CL20846 |
